Fall time in the high country

After a week long trip to Las Vegas for the Interbike trade show, I was in much need of getting outdoors and up high. Crested Butte holds a special place for me and I made a b-line for the mountain bike capital of the world directly following my hiatus in sin city.

I was able to get in a lot of great riding AND got some AMAZING photos. Special thanks to Brian Buell and David Bunt for riding for the camera and Linden for the fun day of riding in circles!

SRAM Crankworx posters

Unfortunately another year will be go by without my making it there for this tramendous bicycle event. SRAM has a lot of great things going on at this year's Kokanee Crankworx in Whistler B.C. There is a World Bicycle Relief pop up store in the Whistler village, with all proceeds going to WBF (http://www.worldbicyclerelief.org).

Today SRAM is hosting a athlete poster signing. Slopestyle/dirtjumper rider Greg Watts will be present, and his poster is one of my photos! The shot was taken during the Best Trick Contest during the Ranchstyle Mountain Bike Festival 2011. I'll be sure to get a copy! If you are in Whistler this week, try and nab a few!

Summer race season is now in full swing! I was in California last week for Sea Otter doing some work for Mountain Flyer Magazine. Now I am in Arizona for the Whiskey 50 working for Epic Rides. I am extremely happy with how things have been shaping up for me lately and this summer will certainly be the best yet!

Today, the freeskiing community mourns the loss of a member of our family. A close-knit community, we’re truly devastated by the passing of Ryan Hawks. We realize nothing compares to the loss for his parents Peter and Jackie and sister Alicia, and our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to them, his entire family and friends. His infectious smile, positive attitude and passion for the mountains and skiing will be missed.

When Ryan was nine years old, he skied the headwall at Tuckerman's ravine and from that point forward was hooked on big mountain skiing. When Ryan wasn’t in school in Vermont, he was skiing with friends and fellow Mad River Glen athletes Lars and Silas Chickering-Ayers. Together, they cruised the continent living out of a van called The General, searching for fresh powder and adventures.

"My father always said, 'A skier carries his own skis,' so I learned how to carry my batman skis by the age of two and have been skiing ever since ...” said Ryan Hawks on his website www.greenmountainfreeride.com. “I grew up on the slopes and was instilled with a deep passion and respect for my surroundings by those very same mountains.”

The freeskiing community sustains itself on the passion and energy of skiers from around the world, a shared love of mountains, skiing, and friendship. Freeskiing is at its best as a group, with all of its members. Ryan, you will be missed.

With his tight skiing style and constant smile Ryan was one in a million. I am honored to have known this awesome, passionate and heartfelt guy. It is always hard loosing a friend... Love life my friends!

Grand Junction has got a BIKE PARK!

A bike park, it’s no new idea. Bike parks are popping up all over Colorado much like skateparks did 10 years ago. Bike parks can be found all around the front range including Boulder, Denver, Golden and well into the mountains. This past weekend Grand Junction opened it’s brand new bike park, the Lunch Loops Bike Park, at the base of the Lunch Loops area and Tabeguache trailhead just outside of Grand Junction.

The park, slightly hidden from view, is tucked into western end of the trailhead parking lot. Once the park becomes visible, you will certainly be amazing with what you see. This entire park, including the dual slalom course, pump track and twenty plus dirt jumps ranging from small rollers all the way up to massive doubles were all built in two weeks time!

The Lunch Loops Bike Park, is spear headed by Jen Taylor, Grand Junction local and is an Officer of the Board of Directors for COPMOBA. Jen Taylor gave some insight on the start of the park. “The idea for this park hit me one day while riding Kurt's Lane, a popular fast trail ending at the parking lot. Riding fast down the trail I came to a stop overlooking the parking area wishing the piles of dirt where still there to jump. And that is when it hit me!”

The project began that April of 2010, with the idea that a bike park in this location could do so much for the community. The already existing infrastructure of a parking lot and bathrooms made it an easy choice. Taylor also said, “The River Front trail now connects to the Monument Road bike path, making it easy for families to get out there. Not everyone does has a bike rack for their car, so this is an easy access to get kids outside and to the park.”

The actual building of the park was completed on an extremely tight time frame of two weeks. “When Jen asked if we could build this park in two weeks, it seemed a little daunting, but possible.” said Greg Mazu of Singletrack Trails. Singletrack Trails was contracted out by the city to build the park. Greg, along with six other crew members erected the park is perfect timing. The park’s grand opening Saturday brought out several hundred people from the community and further.

When asked how he felt after completing the build, James Flatten of Grassroots Cycles replied softly, “I’m tired, really tired. I came into this two week mega build after spending five days in the Utah desert building at the Red Bull Rampage. I’m glad it’s over, now we all can enjoy the hard work that brought our blisters and sore muscles.”

I got to a package today that had been delivered while on my recent travels. it came all the way from Austria. Shaped much like a laptop and weighting with the heft of one as well. Opening it up was greeted to the glossy covers of the Red Bull Illume Photobook 2010.

A letter accompanied this fancy looking book and read as follows;

my parents showed me this awesome sea cave that is a popular hangout for sea turtles. the first time we went down i was not well prepared to photograph in the darkness of the cave. upon returning i was bummed to see there was only two turtles. as any good photographer would do, i took a seat and waited it out. after about 30mins of waiting there was now 12 turtles on the shore of the cave! here is one shot i got from my adventures! enjoy

Fall Tilt in Telluride

typically downhill racing comes down to a 3-5 minute run. how fast can you push yourself to get down the mountain cleanly? well how fast can you go after doing lap after lap on a world cup course after doing so for 8, 10, 12 hours? what about once it gets dark? Yesterday was the second race of the 12hr Fall Tilt in Telluride. Riders pushed themselves and their bikes to the limits of raging down Telluride Mountain for 12 hours. Crazy? YES!!!

Hour twelve and the racers are still going strong!

A day in the life of.... what a dream. Michael and Brian Buell hosted me for an evening of riding and shooting. It was a BLAST!

People kept saying we were crazy for doing what we did. at times we were questioning ourselves as to why we were doing what we were doing. 5600 ft of vert on day one?!!!! sure why not! climb from 7700 to 13000! this turned from a bike trip into a test of endurance and determination. sadly weather and a terrible asthma attack on my part left us with little option but to dip out early. I am disappointed that we didn't get to finish out the full route, but looking back it is hard to be disappointed seeing the terrain we crossed. there is a really good chance no one had been where we were with bikes, ever. riding/hiking old mining trails that were used over a hundred years ago. traversing a ridge at 12500 feet with 1500 vert of exposure to the valley floor. there were several do or die situation we ran into. Not to mention the insane weather that left us jumping into an old mine. Hail and lighting at 13000 feet will make any man feel more like a little baby.

Would I ever go back to attempt the full route? Never! This was definitely a once in a life time experience. We were lucky to make it through unharmed, another attempt would simply be pushing our luck. Thanks to all over our supporters; WTB, Ergon, Bern and of course Banshee Bikes.

Linden Carlson cruizzzzing along at 12500 feet, with a little bit of exposure. it wasn't until we were across the valley until we fully realized the extend of the exposure of this section. riding along on a shelve about four feet wide with an 800 foot climb to another 1000+ feet of 40 deg slope. I recently had a full page photo run in Bike Magazine in an ad for Rooly. Unfortunately someone messed things up and the photo looks like someone sneezed on it before it went to press. BUMMER! Linden Carlson and i have been preparing for over a year for our up coming bike packing trip. Four days, unsupported through some of the roughest mountain Colorado has to offer. Why? Maybe because we are a little crazy, but mostly because we really like to ride our bikes. And we figure why not do it in a place with some amazing views. Our four days of pain and pleasure kick off this Saturday!
